Understanding the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN)

What is a VIN?

A Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) is a unique code assigned to every motor vehicle when it's manufactured. It serves as the car's fingerprint, as no two vehicles in operation have the same VIN.

Since 1981, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has required all over-the-road vehicles to have a 17-character VIN.

How VIN Decoding Works

The 17 characters are divided into sections that reveal the vehicle's heritage and specs:

  • Characters 1-3: World Manufacturer Identifier (WMI)
  • Characters 4-8: Vehicle Descriptor Section (VDS)
  • Character 9: Check Digit (Verification code)
  • Character 10: Model Year
  • Characters 11-17: Plant Code & Serial Number

Where to Find Your VIN?

Most commonly, you can find your VIN on the driver's side dashboard (viewable through the windshield) or on the driver's side door pillar sticker.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this VIN validator free to use?

Yes, our VIN tool is 100% free. We use public algorithms to verify checksums and decode basic manufacturer data.

Why does character 9 matter?

The 9th character is a "check digit." It is calculated using a complex mathematical formula to ensure the VIN is valid and hasn't been tampered with or mistyped.

Can this tool show a vehicle's history?

No, this tool only validates the VIN's structure and decodes manufacturer data. For accident or ownership history, you would need a service like Carfax or AutoCheck.

Does it work for motorcycles?

Yes! Motorcycles, trailers, and RVs manufactured for the US and Canadian markets also follow the 17-character VIN standard.
