What is CVV?
Card Verification Value (CVV) is a security feature for "card not present" transactions. It helps verify that the person making the purchase actually possesses the physical card.
Different Names
Depending on the card brand, it may be called CVV2 (Visa), CVC2 (MasterCard), CID (American Express/Discover), or CSC (Card Security Code).
Security Rules
PCI DSS standards prohibit merchants from storing the CVV after a transaction is authorized. This prevents large-scale data breaches from exposing full card security info.
Security Code Locations
American Express (Front)
A 4-digit code located on the front of the card, above the account number.
Visa/MC/Discover (Back)
A 3-digit code located on the back of the card, within or near the signature strip.
